All three pillars of Thailand as depicted on the national flag: ‘Nation – Religion – Monarchy’, have been passing through the ‘Tunnel of Transition’ in an unprecedented manner.

This tunnel has further dimmed and lengthened after the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) staged a coup d’etat against elected businessmen-cum-politicians on 22 May 2014.

No wonder ordinary citizens – economy class passengers on the ‘Thai High-Speed Train’– are falling prey to a panic attack. The ruled live in fear that this nightmarish train will forever circle the dark maze of power, greed and violence with no exit insight.

Fearful yet fearlessly uncompromising, and deeply moving, ‘Fear’ comprises 10 photographic series and 2 video stills that Manit Sriwanichpoom has been producing through the upheavals, from Thailand’s last election in 2011 until the recent solar eclipse of March 9, 2016.

Born in Bangkok, Manit Sriwanichpoom is one of Thailand’s leading photo artist, and the best known in the international art world, having exhibited worldwide including in the Centre Pompidou (Paris, 2010), The 6th Asia Pacific Triennial (Australia, 2009), Photoquai (Paris, 2007), Gwangju Biennale (Korea, 2006), the Venice Biennale (2003) and Photo Espana (2001). His solo shows include ‘Phenomena & Prophecies’ at the Singapore Art Museum (2010); ‘Lambs of God’ at the Centre for Contemporary Photography (Melbourne, Australia, 2008) and ‘Bangkok in Pink’ at the Yokohama Museum of Art (2002). His works are collected by the Maison Europeenne de la Photographie (Paris), the DG Bank (Germany), the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum (Japan), the Queensland Art Gallery (Australia), the National Gallery of Australia, Koc Foundation (Turkey), the Singapore Art Museum, the National Gallery Singapore and well known private collectors. In 2002 he was picked as one of the world’s 100 most interesting emerging photographers by Phaidon Press in their book BLINK and again 2014 with the same publisher’s Photography Today. In 2007 he was awarded the Higashikawa Overseas Photographer Prize from Japan and 2014 the Chevalier des Arts et Lettres by French Ministry of Culture & Communication.

ประเทศไทยยามนี้เข้าสู่ช่วง “อุโมงค์แห่งการเปลี่ยนผ่าน”  พร้อมๆ กันของ 3 สถาบันหลักบนผืนธงไตรรงค์ไทย:  ‘ชาติ – ศาสน์ – กษัตริย์’  อย่างที่ไม่เคยเกิดขึ้นมาก่อน

หลัง ‘คณะรักษาความสงบแห่งชาติ’ (คสช.)  ทำรัฐประหารยึดอำนาจจากนักธุรกิจเลือกตั้ง เมื่อ 22 พฤษภาคม 2557  ดูเหมือนว่าความยาว  และความมืดมิดของอุโมงค์ยิ่งเพิ่มทวีมากขึ้น

ในฐานะประชาชน – ผู้อยู่ใต้ปกตรอง และเป็นเพียงผู้โดยสารชั้นธรรมดา   ย่อมตกอยู่ในความหวาดกลัว  ‘อกสั่นขวัญแขวน’

กลัวว่า ‘รถไฟความเร็วสูงไทย’  จะยังวิ่งวนอยู่ในเขาวงกตแห่งความมืด  (อำนาจ – ความโลภ – ความรุนแรง) อย่างไร้ทางออก

ทั้งน่ากลัวและกล้าหาญ  กล้ากลัวอย่างไร้ความกลัว  ด้วยผลงานศิลปะที่สะท้อนและสะเทือนอารมณ์อย่างลึกซึ้ง  หนังสือ ‘กลัว’ ประกอบขึ้นจากภาพถ่าย 10 ชุด และภาพนิ่งจากวิดีโอ 2 ชุด ที่ มานิต ศรีวานิชภูมิ  ผลิตขึ้นนับแต่ปี 2554 เมื่อการเลือกตั้งครั้งสุดท้ายของไทย จนถึงปี 2559  เมื่อเกิดสุริยุปราคา 9 มีนาคม 2559  ที่ผ่านไป.
