JONATHAN D. SPENCE was born in England in 1936 and educated at Winchester College and Cambridge University. He came to the United States in 1959 to continue his graduate studies at Yale University, whose faculty he joined in 1965 and where he is now George Burton Adams Professor of History. He lives in Woodbridge, Con-necticut, with his wife and two sons.


Professor Spence is the author of To Change China: Western Advisers in China 1620-1960 (1969), Emperor of China: Self-Portrait of K'ang-hsi (1974), and The Death of Woman Wang (1978), among other works. Of this book, John K. Fairbank has written: "The Gate of Heavenly Peace is obviously a breakthrough from the recent style of Chinese history on a social-science framework to history on the basis of literature and humanist concerns. ...A brilliant achievement."
