East Is a Big Bird: Navigation and Logic on Puluwat Atoll by Thomas Gladwin

  • 3,500.00 ฿

On Puluwat the cardinal direction is east, under the rising of Altair, the "Big Bird."

Puluwat is a small atoll in Micronesia - beautiful tropical islands with a few hundred handsome people noted for their sailing canoes and their navigational skill in piloting the open Pacific. Their seafaring life and continued reliance on the sailing canoe are meaningful beyond the practicalities of economic, social, and political interchange among the islands; the exchange of people and things and ideas could today be achieved reasonably well through travel on the small passenger-carrying ships which make regular administrative and trading trips through the islands. Loyalty to the sailing canoe, however, reflects the Puluwatans' enthusiasm for meeting the challenge of the sea: the accomplished navigator is both hero and leader, and pitting himself against the sea is a source of strength and a measure of his worth as a man.
