Many cultures have flourished in Anatolia since the Neolithic Age, and each has left lasting evidence of its accomplishments in the objects fashioned by its artists and craftsmen. The treasures from the rich and varied past of the land that is now the Republic of Turkey offer a unique summary of much of the history of world civilization.
This volume is the permanent record of an exhibition of almost 300 of these objects.
Both sacred and secular works of art are repre-sented: copies of the Koran, rugs, mirrors, jewelry, helmets, weapons, household utensils, manu-scripts, bindings, wall paintings, statuary, sultans' clothing, goblets, a lantern and even a pair of carved wooden window shutters.
Four outstanding scholars discuss the history and culture of the peoples who created these works of art. Machteld Mellink describes the art of Anatolia prior to 1200 B.C. Rodney S. Young deals with the early Iron Age, the Classical period, and the Roman Empire. Paul A. Underwood covers the Byzantine era, and Richard Ettinghausen comments on the Islamic period.
Art Treasurers of Turkey is a handsome introduction to the diverse artistic traditions which have met and developed in the land where East meets West.
