With the help of the British Consul in Bangkok, Thomson was able to gain an audience with King Mongkut who granted him permission to take some formal portraits of the King, his royal family and chief ministers. Whilst in Bangkok he was invited to attend and document an important ceremony for the heir apparent Crown Prince Chulalongkorn, as well as photographing the royal barge and a major funeral. Thomson stayed on in Bangkok for several months and photographed many aspects of the city, river scenes, its surrounding countryside and people.

Having read a number of accounts of the Cambodian jungle and the amazing Angkor Wat ruins, Thomson was eager to see them for himself. Waswo’s MEN OF RAJASTHAN has by now become a bit of a cult classic, and Serindia Contemporary is proud to release this deluxe and expanded hardcover edition. Based on the original paperback edition published in conjunction with an eponymous exhibition at Serindia Gallery, Bangkok, in January of 2011, this updated volume includes new photographs from both the Studio in Rajasthan series and also the series New Myths.

Waswo playfully examines the genres of both the ethnographic photograph-as-document that is linked to the colonial era, as well as the fantasy-inspired make-believe that has emanated from traditional Indian portrait studios. Using the dual attributes of each—fact and fiction—Waswo concocts an inspired mix of homage and critique. The resultant images straddle a line between the retro and the contemporary that resist easy efforts to classify them. They can cause a viewer to rethink what he initially perceives, question the dialogue set up between photographer and model, and eventually challenge the viewer’s own preconceptions. Actresses, models, dancers, portrayed without asking to be anything else than themself at ease. I wanted to represent their personality under natural sunlight; I didn't want any fashion poses. I wanted them to feel they don't need to look like a standard. For years I tried to shoot the model as she looks when she walks into the studio, her natural self, before the makeup and clothes. I never wanted to shoot a standard imposed by someone, and I see the struggle of trying to conform to an idea. That struggle kills the beauty of the person entirely. We live in a world where people are trying as hard as they can to look like something deprived by poetry and soul. Instagram beauty filters, the unreal Photoshop skin retouching, are today the same base standards of Social Media aesthetics. These impossible beauty standards change contemporary society's view, especially for the women who are often chasing an unattainable digital image. The shots of this book project don't have any digital retouch or alteration. The objective is to show a more sincere view of female beauty and a person's character over how she needs to look to be accepted. The Art's tone is not celebratory nor tends to enhance anything other than the model's personalities. Here in Thailand, where I've shot the whole project, the beauty standard's perception is dictated by Social Media. Thai youngsters spend more time on Social Media than anyone in the World, and digital images strongly influence their perception of beauty."

Limited edition of 300 copies, 96 pages, 24x32cm, Softcover

Salt prints are the very first photographs on paper that still exist today. They took pictures of their loved ones, their vacations, their celebrations. They memorialized the births of babies; a child in a cowboy outfit; a new color television set; sightseeing in National Parks; fishing trips; lazing on the beach; weddings; office parties; family reunions; holding hands, kissing and dancing. Imagining these lives and the possible stories that lie behind the images is what makes The Anonymous Project such a compelling journey into our past. Filmmaker Lee Shulman bought a set of 35mm Kodachrome slides―anonymous family photos―and was so taken with what he calls “the emotional value of these slices of life” that he knew he had to have more. He launched The Anonymous Project in 2017 and has since acquired around 700,000 images either by donation or via vintage sellers. As noted photography critic Richard B. Woodward writes in the introduction: “It is significant―and fascinating―that in virtually every image here, photographer and subject seem to know one another. By dawn or dusk, in New York, Havana, Salvador da Bahia, or Tokyo, it is an environment fraught with yearning, aching with solitude, and fretful with fortunes never made. This searing urban portrait from visual artist Miguel Rio Branco draws upon his itinerant early years as the son of diplomats to reveal the common threads of struggle and loneliness in metropolises around the world.The images are impeccably captured, but the pictures are not always pretty. Rio Branco is not interested in documenting historic city landmarks, an impressive skyline, or the aspirational dreams that soar up towards it. Instead, he focuses his camera on the city’s refuse and margins―on that which it has thrown away and on those it has cast aside and disappointed. In stark frames or soft impressions, it is street sleepers, beggars, prostitutes, stray dogs, smashed cars, and shattered glass that characterize his urban impressions.

While subtle details reveal the specificity of place, it is the commonality of urban experience at the heart of Rio Branco’s project. Light on local context or explanatory narrative, the images are instead meticulously arranged into one redolent sequence of a universal city. Working as if in the cutting studio, Rio Branco excels in the rhythm and succession of pictures, crafting evocative patterns of motif (decrepit buildings, lone figures, smashed-up cars); color (rich reds, dusty pinks, stark whites and blues); and form (an anguished street sleeper beside an ecstatic statue of a saint). Throughout, occasional pictures of women are proffered as sensual, hopeful reprieve, interspersing the grit and the grime in commanding portraits or up-close, supple nudes.

At once incisive in its message and lyrical in its arrangement, Maldicidade focuses attention on the city’s ineludible magnetism, as much as on its alienation and inhumanity. His subjects are from different countries, victims to different crises, but they are all on the move, and all under the age of 15. Through his extensive refugee project, what struck Salgado about these boys and girls was not only the implicit innocence in their suffering but also their radiant reserves of energy and enthusiasm, even in the most miserable of circumstances. From roadside refuges in Angola and Burundi to city slums in Brazil and sprawling camps in Lebanon and Iraq, the children remained children: they were quick to laugh as much as to cry, they played soccer, splashed in dirty water, got up to mischief with friends, and were typically ecstatic at the prospect of being photographed.

For Salgado, the exuberance presented a curious paradox. How can a smiling child represent circumstances of deprivation and despair? What he noticed, though, was that when he asked the children to line up, and took their portraits one by one, the group giddiness would fade. Face to face with his camera, each child would become much more serious. They would look at him not as part of a noisy crowd, but as an individual. Their poses would become earnest. They looked into the lens with a sudden intensity, as if abruptly taking stock of themselves and their situation. And in the expression of their eyes, or the nervous fidget of small hands, or the way frayed clothes hung off painfully thin frames, Salgado found he had a refugee portfolio that deserved a forum of its own.

The photographs do not try to make a statement about their subjects’ feelings, or to spell out the particulars of their health, educational, and housing deficits. Beautiful, proud, pensive, and sad, they stand before the camera for a moment in their lives, but ask questions that haunt for years to come. Will they remain in exile? When he looked through the viewfinder, he experienced a revelation: suddenly life made sense. From that day onward―though it took years of hard work before he had the experience to earn his living as a photographer―the camera became his tool for interacting with the world. Salgado, who “always preferred the chiaroscuro palette of black-and-white images,” shot very little color in his early career before giving it up completely.

Raised on a farm in Brazil, Salgado possessed a deep love and respect for nature; he was also particularly sensitive to the ways in which human beings are affected by their often devastating socio-economic conditions. Of the myriad works Salgado has produced in his acclaimed career, three long-term projects stand out: Workers (1993), documenting the vanishing way of life of manual laborers across the world; Migrations (2000), a tribute to mass migration driven by hunger, natural disasters, environmental degradation and demographic pressure; and this new opus, GENESIS, the result of an epic eight-year expedition to rediscover the mountains, deserts and oceans, the animals and peoples that have so far escaped the imprint of modern society―the land and life of a still-pristine planet. “Some 46% of the planet is still as it was in the time of genesis,” Salgado reminds us. “We must preserve what exists.” The GENESIS project, along with the Salgados’ Instituto Terra, are dedicated to showing the beauty of our planet, reversing the damage done to it, and preserving it for the future.

Over 30 trips―traveled by foot, light aircraft, seagoing vessels, canoes, and even balloons, through extreme heat and cold and in sometimes dangerous conditions―Salgado created a collection of images showing us nature, animals, and indigenous peoples in breathtaking beauty. Mastering the monochrome with an extreme deftness to rival the virtuoso Ansel Adams, Salgado brings black-and-white photography to a new dimension; the tonal variations in his works, the contrasts of light and dark, recall the works of Old Masters such as Rembrandt and Georges de La Tour.

What does one discover in GENESIS? The animal species and volcanoes of the Galápagos; penguins, sea lions, cormorants, and whales of the Antarctic and South Atlantic; Brazilian alligators and jaguars; African lions, leopards, and elephants; the isolated Zo’é tribe deep in the Amazon jungle; the Stone Age Korowai people of West Papua; nomadic Dinka cattle farmers in Sudan; Nenet nomads and their reindeer herds in the Arctic Circle; Mentawai jungle communities on islands west of Sumatra; the icebergs of the Antarctic; the volcanoes of Central Africa and the Kamchatka Peninsula; Saharan deserts; the Negro and Juruá rivers in the Amazon; the ravines of the Grand Canyon; the glaciers of Alaska... and beyond. His dense, realistic photographs conjure up tangible utopias of community and society and are important documents of their time as well. With the follow-up volume Burg (1998), Tillmans enriches his subject matter with another array of beautiful, now iconic photographs. In truth study center (2005), his images condense into even more subtle compositions and now stand alongside completely abstract works. Finally, Neue Welt (2012) documents Wolfgang Tillmans’ travels around the globe: from London to Tierra del Fuego, India, Papua New Guinea, Saudi Arabia, and Central Africa, we follow his ever-inquisitive eye for the realities of our planet, for social situations with people and markets, technology and architecture, and last but not least, nature and astronomy. For this volume, the artist for the first time made use of the new possibilities of digital photography. This enabled a density of information and incisiveness hardly seen in photographs until then.This 40th-anniversary publication from TASCHEN combines the best of the four books in one volume.

The photographs in this book are selections from a much larger body of work that the artist broadly refers to as A Studio in Rajasthan.

220 x 280mm 150 pagess, Hardcover

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0606/1817/products/large-MenofRajasthan-2014-Cover-SM_a7fef1e4-cb41-44fc-85e3-a0516959da64.jpg?v=1620482692
genesis-by-sebastiao-salgado
Genesis by Sebastião Salgado

**If not in-store, please allow up to 2 weeks for delivery** หากหนังสือหมดจากหน้าร้าน เราจะส่งภายใน 10-14 วัน**

“In GENESIS, my camera allowed nature to speak to me. And it was my privilege to listen.” ―Sebastião Salgado

On a very fortuitous day in 1970, 26-year-old Sebastião Salgado held a camera for the first time.

The animal species and volcanoes of the Galápagos; penguins, sea lions, cormorants, and whales of the Antarctic and South Atlantic; Brazilian alligators and jaguars; African lions, leopards, and elephants; the isolated Zo’é tribe deep in the Amazon jungle; the Stone Age Korowai people of West Papua; nomadic Dinka cattle farmers in Sudan; Nenet nomads and their reindeer herds in the Arctic Circle; Mentawai jungle communities on islands west of Sumatra; the icebergs of the Antarctic; the volcanoes of Central Africa and the Kamchatka Peninsula; Saharan deserts; the Negro and Juruá rivers in the Amazon; the ravines of the Grand Canyon; the glaciers of Alaska... and beyond. Having dedicated so much time, energy, and passion to the making of this work, Salgado calls GENESIS “my love letter to the planet.”

Whereas the limited Collector’s Edition is conceived like a large-format portfolio that meanders across the planet, this unlimited book presents a selection of photographs arranged in five chapters geographically: Planet South, Sanctuaries, Africa, Northern Spaces, Amazonia, and Pantanal. Each in its own way, this book and the Collector’s Edition―both edited and designed by Lélia Wanick Salgado―pay homage to Salgado’s triumphant and unparalleled GENESIS project.

Text by Lélia Wanick Salgado

Hardcover, 4.83 cms H x 37.08 cms L x 25.91 cms W (3.95 kgs) 520 pages

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0606/1817/products/ScreenShot2021-05-08at9.16.32PM_1abd381e-8ea4-4013-8f5b-90609fa770f4.png?v=1620483598
